Ring for a doctor to attend who will certify that death has taken place. (The doctor will, if able to, usually issue a Medical Certificate Of Cause Of Death which will be required by the Registrar.)

Ring for a funeral director to attend who will arrange to move the person into their care (a 24 hour service is provided for this reason).

A death is required to be registered at the local registrars in the district in which the death has occurred within 5 working days. In addition to other forms, the registrars will issue a green certificate for Notification of Burial or Cremation which is required by the funeral director in order for a service to take place.

Funeral arrangements may be made as soon as you feel ready to do so.

In Hospital:

The hospital doctors will arrange for a Medical Certificate of Cause of Death to be issued as soon as possible, and staff will advise you when this will be available for collection.

A funeral director should be contacted as soon as you feel ready to do so, who will be able to help and guide you through this difficult time.

The Coroner:

In certain circumstances a death may be referred to the coroner. In these instances, please contact a funeral director who will be able to advise you.
